Ian Woosnam OBE
One of Britain’s greatest ever golfers, Ian Woosnam is a Major winner who starred on the PGA and European Tours throughout the 1980s and 90s. One of the ‘Big Five’ golfers who was born within 12 months of one another and all who went on to win Majors, Ian joined his peers Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Sandy Lyle in making golfing history.

Ian first began playing golf at Llanymynech Golf Club on the Wales/England border. Despite being regarded as small for a golfer, he had a fantastic drive and turned professional in 1976. Soon after, he made his European Tour debut in 1979. Despite what would come later, life on tour was not always glamorous for Ian. In fact, a lot of the time he’d travel around the continent in a camping van and eating baked beans to save money. But this hardship was rewarded.
His first European Tour victory came at the 1981 Swiss Open, and his name became a regular occurrence at the top of leaderboards. In 1985, he was part of the Europe team that was victorious in the Ryder Cup for the first time ever. In total, he won five Ryder Cups, including one as captain in 2006. He was also victorious on 29 occasions on the European Tour. As one of the most popular golf after-dinner speakers on the circuit, he can discuss these career highlights at length, much to the delight of audiences everywhere.
Despite all of his successes on the European Tour, undoubtedly the best moment of his career came in 1991 when he was victorious at the Masters. In the same year, he spent a staggering 50 weeks at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, making him officially the best player on the planet.
In 2001, when aged 43, he became the oldest player to win the World Match Play Championship. And in recent years he’s made the transition to the European Senior Tour (currently known as the Legends Tour). He has five victories on the Tour to his name, and topped the Order of Merit in 2008. In 2017 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame as a reward for his stellar career.
