Who is Lord Sebastian Coe?
Lord Sebastian Coe is amongst one of the UK’s most prolific world record setters and arguably the greatest middle-distance runner to compete for his country.
What are Lord Sebastian Coe’s main achievements?
Sebastian was born in London in 1956 and began what would become his infamous athletics career at the age of 12. It wasn’t until 1977 that he began to make his mark, when he won the 800m at the European Indoor Championship. What followed was a string of world records and by 1980, Sebastian won his first Olympic medal for the 1,500m in Moscow.
By 1990, Sebastian was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire, earning his MBE, and was elected Chairman of the British Olympic Association for his incredible wins and efforts, a post he held until 2016. He is also Non-Executive Chairman of CSM Sport & Entertainment marketing agency, and in 2015 was elected President of the World Governing Body for Athletics.
What is Lord Sebastian Coe best known for?
Sebastian is well regarded in the world of athletics and his famous rivalry with fellow runner Steve Ovett dominated athletics for much of the mid to late 80s. Sebastian swiftly became one of the most beloved athletes in the UK, setting 12 middle-distance world records for his country.
He is today, however, best known for his political work. In 1992, following a two-year retirement from athletics, Sebastian was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Falmouth and Camborne. He held his seat for 5 years until he became Private Secretary to William Hague, the leader of the Opposition. By 2000, Sebastian was appointed a life peer, becoming his present title, Lord Coe of Ranmore.
