Levison Wood
Former Army Major turned explorer, Levison Wood is a professional explorer, writer and photographer who has worked and travelled in over 100 countries. Levison is famous for his numerous trekking expeditions across Africa, Asia and beyond. From walking the length of Madagascar to climbing mountains in Iraq, the more extreme and dangerous the experience for Levison, the better.
Levison has written 11 best-selling books and six critically acclaimed documentaries that have aired around the world. His latest motivational book is called The Art of Exploration and was released in June 2021. ‘Britain’s best-loved adventurer’ (The Times) talks about his secrets of discovery for the first time in this revealing manual of what it means to be an explorer in the modern age.
He is an elected Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club and is an ambassador, patron and high-profile supporter for a number of charities, including UNICEF and Leica. Now, he’s bringing his experiences to audiences across the country in the capacity of an adventure and exploring speaker. Before developing his passion for exploring into a career, Levison served in the Army for 13 years and was commissioned in the parachute regiment and stationed in Afghanistan. Here, he saw the epitome of human cruelty, trauma and suffering on a daily basis. This has remained with him, and alongside anecdotes of his expeditions, he is also happy to share stories from his military career. These experiences ultimately motivated him in other areas of life.
Many of Levison’s expeditions have been documented for television, including his Arabia with Levison Wood series. This saw him take on a full circumnavigation of the Arabian Penisula, and head into some of the most hostile parts of the world including Syria and Iraq. During this, he also walked through Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Lebanon. In addition to walking a staggering 5,000 miles on this expedition, he also had to contend with ISIS troops and gruelling temperatures. Most recently, Levison released the documentary Walking with Elephants for Channel 4. This saw him follow elephants in Botswana for more than 600 miles. His latest series about endangered animals aired in August 2023 on Channel 4.
