Arlene Phillips is a dancer, choreographer, judge and one of the UK’s most popular TV presenters. Perhaps best known for her role as a judge on a number of primetime entertainment programmes, such as Strictly Come Dancing and So You Think You Can Dance?, Arlene’s glittering personality perfectly matches her former dancing career and she’s certain to shimmer at every occasion she appears at, whether that’s as an after-dinner speaker or event host.
Following a highly successful professional dancing career that saw her feature some of the biggest West End and Broadway musicals among her credits, Arlene decided to focus more on choreography than actually dancing herself. Arlene even choreographed the entire opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games in 2002, and her expertise in the world of dance is unrivalled.
This expertise was placed front and centre when, in 2004, Arlene joined the cast of a brand-new Saturday night entertainment show – Strictly Come Dancing. On the panel of judges, it was Arlene’s job to provide feedback to the celebrities who were competing for the Glitterball trophy. Widely praised for her fair and constructive criticism that helped the show’s contestants improve, the show was hit by controversy when they decided to replace Arlene in 2008. The public outcry was a testament to Arlene’s likeable personality and fantastic dancing insight that was being lost, with the BBC accused of ageism over the decision.
