Brian O’Driscoll
One of the greatest rugby players of all time, Brian O’Driscoll is a former Ireland and British & Irish Lions captain who played over 100 games for his country, leading them to the 2009 Six Nations Grand Slam. As well as this, he had a distinguished career with Leinster where he won four league titles and three European Cups. Since retiring from professional rugby, Brian has worked as a TV pundit and has become well known as one of the best rugby after dinner speakers on the circuit.
Brain’s family growing up was full of rugby heroes. His father Frank played two matches for his country, and cousins Barry and John were also Ireland internationals. With this in mind, it was no surprise that Brian followed in their footsteps and made his domestic debut for Leinster in 1999. After representing the team for 15 years, Brian was a one-club man and won a host of honours with the team.
However, it was on the international stage that he really made his name. His debut for his country came in 1999, and a year later he scored a hattrick in a Six Nations win over France – Ireland’s first victory in Paris since the 1970s. Brian’s dominant performances in the centre of the pitch saw him become a firm fan favourite and in 2003 he was made his country’s captain on a permanent basis. Under his leadership, Ireland won two Six Nations titles, including a Grand Slam in 2009 – its first in 61 years.
On a personal level, he also became the all-time top Six Nations try scorer, named Six Nations Player of the Year on three occasions and in 2016 was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
