Darren Campbell MBE
Darren Campbell is a former British sprinter who is regarded as one of the country’s greatest ever runners. Over the course of his highly successful career, he won gold medals at the Olympics, European Championships and Commonwealth Games. Now, he can be found working as one of the most popular athletics speakers around, attending events across the country where he utilises the skills he learned in his athletics career and helps apply them to audiences. Growing up, Darren was a talented footballer but chose to focus on athletics. Winning a whole host of medals in junior events, he also unfortunately suffered from various injuries at the start of his career. So much so, that aged 21 he gave up on the sport and decided to make it as a professional footballer. This didn’t work out either, and in 1995 he returned to athletics. Rejuvenated, he represented Great Britain at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In 1998, Darren won his first senior gold medal at the European Championships in Budapest. From here he never looked back and went on to win countless honours including a gold medal in the 4X100m relays in Athens and two in the same event at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2002.
Since retiring in 2006, Darren has worked as an ambassador for Sky Sports taking part in a number of initiatives with young people. In this role, he helps use the power of sport to support those who may be at risk of giving up on their education and helping them to fulfil their potential. Plus, he’s worked as a spriting coach at a number of elite sporting organisations. This includes Premier League football clubs Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea and rugby teams Wasps, Sale Sharks and Saracens. In this role, he provided advice and coaching sessions to the players, advising them how to sprint most efficiently in their respective sports.
