Darren Gough MBE
Arguably English cricket’s greatest ever bowler, Darren Gough spent over a decade as the national team’s fast bowler, becoming his country’s second-highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals. Overall, ‘Goughy’ as he is affectionately known among his teammates, played in 58 Test matches and 159 ODIs for his country and took a staggering 855 first-class wickets for both county and country. Now, he has moved into after-dinner speaking and is regularly booked for corporate and personal events across the country. At his cricket speaking occasions, Darren is able to discuss his highly successful career, the current state of English cricket and engage in Q&As with audiences.
In 1994 Darren made his England debut against New Zealand in both formats of the game. Throughout the mid-90s and early noughties, Darren was regarded as one of the best bowlers in the country and took part in some of the biggest matches of the time. In his capacity as a cricket after-dinner speaker, he’s able to discuss what it was like representing his country at the highest level of the game, and how he coped with the pressure of going head-to-head with some of the greatest batsmen of his generation.
Darren also made an impact at county level, spending 15 years and two spells at his beloved Yorkshire. This included captaining the team and being a member of the 2001 County Championship winning team – the first time the team had won the trophy in 33 years.
Due to Darren’s excellent sense of humour, charisma and down to earth persona, since retiring from professional cricket he’s become a popular media personality. This includes starring on primetime TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing (where he became the first cricketer to win the show in 2005), but he was also a team captain on the larger than life game show Hole in the Wall. This personality seamlessly transitions to his after-dinner speaking engagements where he’s always a hit among audiences. Furthermore, since 2009 he’s been a regular on TalkSport, presenting the drive-time show with Adrian Durham where he provides his views and insight on the latest news and goings-on in the world of sport.
Recently, Darren’s cricket expertise has been called upon in the professional game. In 2019 he spent time working with the England cricket team as a fast bowling consultant, and in 2021 he returned to his former country Yorkshire as Director of Cricket.
