Dee Caffari made history when, in 2006, she became the first woman ever to single-handedly sail the ‘wrong way around the world’. Battling sharp winds and formidable currents, Dee decided to head the opposite way around the globe to the usual direction of travel, experiencing life-risking obstacles and unprecedented challenges along the way. Now, she works as a leading adventure and exploring speaker drawing upon stories from her incredible life story to motivate audiences everywhere. Dee’s first taste of a world the round expedition came in 2004 when she took on the Global Challenge Round the World Yacht Race. This expedition included a fully amateur crew and is regarded as one of the toughest sailing expeditions in the world. While this challenge was completed, it wasn’t without its problems. A member of her crew suffered from a severe abdominal infection while in the Southern Ocean, and had to be airlifted to the closest hospital. In her capacity as one of the most popular adventure and exploring speakers on the circuit, she can discuss this moment and how she kept her calm to cope with it.
In 2005 she began the expedition that saw her gain fame throughout the sailing world. Spending a staggering 178 days alone at sea, she successfully circumnavigated the world, coping with everything mother nature threw her way. In recent years Dee has become an incredibly inspiring individual in her community, supporting charities and fundraising efforts such as Toe in the Water and Sail 4 Cancer. As well as this, she sits on the board of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, is an honorary commander of the Royal Navy and in 2021 was named a BRIT Ambassador for the BRIT 2021 Challenge – a mental health charity.
