Graeme Le Saux
A former Chelsea, Southampton and England defender, Graeme Le Saux spent almost the entirety of his career at the highest level. A Premier League, League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup winner, he played over 500 career matches and earned 36 England caps. Now a recognisable pundit for the BBC and NBC, Graeme is also regarded as one of the best football speakers around, casting a thoughtful yet insightful eye over the modern game and sharing a whole host of engrossing and humorous anecdotes from his career.
Graeme came through the Chelsea academy in the late 80s, moving from his home in Jersey to London to make his dream a reality. His talent was soon recognised and he made his debut for the club in 1989 against Portsmouth. This was his only appearance of the season, but Chelsea were promoted to the First Division and he truly established himself in the side once they were back in the top-flight. The Chelsea of Graeme’s early career were very different to the modern side, and the team often found themselves in mid-table rather than competing for major honours.
This spurred his decision to move to Blackburn in 1993. Backed by businessman Jack Walker, the club was going through a stage of major investment and Graeme joined the likes of Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton and Tim Sherwood at the club. It was a decision that paid off, and with Kenny Dalglish as manager, Graeme was a key member of the squad that overcame the odds to win the Premier League title. The greatest moment in Blackburn’s history, there aren’t many football speakers who can claim to have as a good an insight into this achievement as Graeme, and at his after-dinner events, it always features highly on his list of stories.
In 1997 he returned to Chelsea, who by now were starting to become more competitive. In his second spell with the Blues Graeme won the League Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup. In 2003 he went to Southampton to end his career, just as Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased his former club and at his events, he’s able to offer a real insight into the difference between the club he played for, and the European giants that Chelsea are today.
Due to having a different lifestyle off the pitch to your stereotypical player, which included a university background and a keen interest in politics and current affairs, this led to some supporters and players wrongly assuming Graeme was gay. As a result, he regularly found himself on the receiving end of homophobic abuse from fans, and even some players. At his speaking events, Graeme is able to discuss what it was like to receive this kind of abuse and why it’s important that the game makes more of an effort to be more welcoming to everyone.
Since retiring, as well as his football speaking work Graeme has become a popular pundit, and also spends his time working on the board of Spanish side RCD Mallorca.
