Graham Gooch OBE
Best known for captaining Essex and England, Graham Gooch is regarded as one of the most successful batsmen in English cricketing history. The third highest Test run-scorer for England with a tally of 8,900, he played 118 Test matches for his country and 125 ODIs. In domestic cricket, he was a one county man and spent the entirety of his time in England with Essex over a spell of 24 years. He remains one of Essex’s greatest ever players who starred during a golden era for the county as they won six County Championships. Now, he works as a popular cricket speaker, attending events everywhere where he can share stunning stories from his remarkable career.
Graham made his international debut in 1975 aged just 21. From here, it wasn’t long until he was a mainstay in the team and in 1980 he was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing and in 1982 he and several of his teammates were banned for their role in the controversial South African Rebel Tour. Overcoming this moment, he was reinstated to the team in 1985 and carried on where he left off as one of the nation’s best batsmen. In his role as a cricket speaker, he can discuss all of the highs and lows of his tremendous career in vivid detail.
Since hanging up his cricket whites for the final time in 1997, Graham has stayed active in the game working as a successful coach. In 2001 he joined his beloved Essex as head coach, a role he held for four years. Ever since he’s remained at the club in an advisory capacity as well as embarking on a number of commercial ventures for the team. In 2009 he was named batting coach for the tour of South Africa, and his advice was so well respected that he was given the role full-time once the tour had been completed.
