Arguably one of the most inspirational women and diversity keynote speakers on the speaking circuit, Harnaam Kaur is globally recognised for being a model and activist who has pushed the boundaries and used her experiences with adversity as a force for good. A woman who is famous for having a beard, she gained worldwide fame in 2014 when she began speaking out on her experiences of bullying and abuse on social media.
Born into a traditional Punjabi family in Slough, Harnaam was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome when she was 12. This condition sees the female body receive too many male hormones and, in Harnaam’s case, has resulted in her growing excess face and body hair – including a full beard. Despite her constant attempts to remove the hair, she was fighting a losing battle due to the speed of its growth, and this meant she was met with relentless bullying during her school years. This bullying, coupled with streams of online abuse on social media, left Harnaam with deep emotional scars leading to her committing self-harm and even a suicide attempt.
Now, she has harnessed these negative experiences and uses them to shape her after-dinner speaking events. What makes Harnaam one of the most successful diversity keynote speakers around is that she’s able to resonate with audiences everywhere thanks to her raw and no holds barred approach to some extremely difficult topics.
Harnaam rose to prominence in 2014. At the time she was working as a primary school teaching assistant, and she began documenting her experiences by giving public interviews and on social media. This started to catch the attention of photographers and journalists and it wasn’t long until she began working as a freelance model, championing positive body image.
Since then, Harnaam has been included in high-profile photography exhibits and even became the first woman with a beard to walk London Fashion Week, in 2016. When hired as an event speaker she’s able to discuss how her life has changed since finding fame and project her positive messaging to audiences up and down the country.
