Who is Sir Iain Duncan Smith?

Sir Iain Duncan Smith is the former Leader of the Opposition, Cabinet Minister and has represented the Conservative party as a Member of Parliament for over 30 years. 

What are Sir Iain Duncan Smith’s main achievements?  

Iain’s main achievements include fronting the Conservative Party for two years; holding the role of Work and Pension Secretary in the cabinet of Prime Minister David Cameron, pushing through the largest package of welfare reforms since the war, setting up the influential think tank the Centre for Social Justice, (the CSJ works to resolve issues affecting the most deprived, helping them into work, Forming the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, a group concerned about the growing power of China. It is made up of 30 countries from Japan to the USA. For his efforts in exposing the Uyghur genocide by the Chinese government, he was sanctioned by the Chinese Government. He is also Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary committee on Magnitsky Sanctions. In opposition during the period of Tony Blairs Labour government, he became Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary and later Shadow Defence Secretary in 1999 in the cabinet of William Hague.

Politics however was a later feat for Iain, as in 1975 he entered Army training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst; and was commissioned into the Scots Guards where he rose to the rank of Captain in 1979.

He saw active service (service in a conflict/war zone) in Northern Ireland and in what was then called Rhodesia and subsequently Zimbabwe.

Before he went into politics and after leaving the Army he worked in Business, in electronics and property.

What is Sir Iain Duncan Smith best known for? 

Iain is best known for his prominent period as the Leader of the Conservative Party between 2001-03. He won 61% of the votes cast, and his victory was all the more remarkable because he was the only one of five candidates to have never before served as a government minister. Iain also wrote a novel, The Devils Tune in 2003

Iain was also a key voice during the Brexit campaign, using his platform to support the ‘leave,’ and in 2019, he acted as Chairman to Boris Johnson’s successful promotion to Prime Minister. Iain has developed strong contacts in the USA with meetings with different administration members.
