There are not many people in the world who have competed at the highest level of professional sport. But when it comes to golfer Jean van de Velde, this is absolutely the case. For more than 30 years, Jean has competed at the peak of pro golf, standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the sport’s most iconic players and in many of the game’s biggest events. This includes competing in all four Major championships and at the Ryder Cup. Turning professional in 1987, Jean made his European Tour debut two years later. His maiden Tour win came in 1993 at the Roma Masters, and he quickly became one of the Tour’s most popular players. He twice finished in the top 20 of the Order and Merit, and at all of his speaking events is able to detail the highlights of his career much to the delight of audiences.
Jean’s greatest year was undoubtedly 1999. Despite being ranked 152nd in the world, he almost achieved the greatest sporting upsets of all time. Going into the final round of the Open at Carnoustie, he was five shots ahead going into the final round. Needing only a double bogey six to become the first French player since 1907 to win a major golf tournament, it sadly wasn’t to be and he ended up losing in a playoff. Despite it not going Jean’s way, the finale of the event has gone down in history as one of the most dramatic conclusions of the Open. In fact, he revisited the event for the Netflix series Losers. At his speaking events, he’s always able to discuss this historic moment and how he was able to overcome this adversity and continue to have a hugely successful career.
