Katie Neeves has been a professional photographer and filmmaker for 34 years, but she came out publicly as being transgender after living for 48 years as a man. During this time, she struggled with her gender and hid her true self from the outside world. Since coming to terms with her true self, Katie created Cool2BTrans an organisation that aims to support others struggling with their identity, whilst also educating people on trans issues. Now, she works as one of the most inspirational diversity and inclusion speakers around, using her platform to inspire audiences across the country.
From the age of three or four, Katie knew that she was female. Despite being born male and named Martin, even from this young age she was aware her brain and heart were telling her something different. She began cross-dressing from an early age, feeling far more comfortable in girls’ and women’s clothes. As she grew, she was thrown into turmoil when her gender dysphoria increased dramatically, leaving her with feelings of guilt, shame and self-loathing.
Eventually, she was able to go on a voyage of discovery before finally admitting to herself that she is a transgender woman and that she needed to change her body. She then came out very publicly via a coming-out video that she posted on her social media, something she sent to all the clients of her photography and video business, risking her livelihood and reputation in the process. In her capacity as a diversity and inclusion speaker, audiences can hear first-hand her traumatic journey that eventually saw her find peace and clarity within herself.
In recent years, Katie formed Cool2BTrans to support and inspire other trans people and also to educate everyone else on trans issues by showing them that trans people are just ordinary people who want to be happy – just like everyone else. She helps organisations with diversity and inclusion by providing trans awareness training in an entertaining way by using humour to break down barriers. She has also made frequent appearances on a number of primetime TV shows for BBC and ITV, educating audiences on trans issues. Plus, she was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in 2021.
