Despite failing to make the cut at several tournaments throughout the year, he did so at this Major event. He made it into the tournament via sectional qualifying and had to sink a six-foot birdie to even qualify. He managed it and the rest was history.
Finishing the third round just four strokes behind defending champion Retief Goosen, in the final round Michael shot a sensational 69. Finishing one shot ahead of the legend Tiger Woods, Michael claimed his first-ever Major victory. In the same year, he also won the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth and the one million pound prize that came with it. Today, Michael can still recall these wins in vivid detail, and they always make for a fascinating listen at every event he attends.
Michael left the European Tour in 2013 and has since played in several senior and exhibition events. He remains an active personality within the sport, but when away from golf he is also a keen environmental activist. In fact, he is the co-founder of Lifefoot Trust. The organisation helps sports teams in New Zealand lessen their environmental impact while saving money at the same time.
