Mike Gatting OBE
A former England international captain who played 72 Test matches for his country, Mike Gatting is regarded as one of the best batsmen of his generation. In the domestic game, he represented Middlesex for 23 years racking up more than 36,000 first-class runs – a staggering achievement.

Before he made the decision to pursue cricket, Mike was a keen footballer who regularly played for Watford reserves. After unsuccessful trials with QPR and Arsenal, he realised that cricket was his calling and left football to his brother who went on to play professionally.
For Middlesex, Mike quickly earned a reputation of being one of the team’s most successful batsmen, and it wasn’t long until he caught the eye of England selectors. In 1977 he made his ODI debut against Pakistan, before making his Test debut against the same opposition one month later in January 1978.
While Mike was always a solid player, in his early days he struggled to convert fifties into centuries. In fact, it took him until his 54th Test innings to do so. But once he did, he became one of the team’s most reliable players.
