Nasser Hussain OBE
Nasser Hussain is a former professional cricketer and captain of the England cricket team, whose outstanding batting ability saw him play 96 Tests and 88 ODIs for his country. In total, he scored more than 30,000 runs (including a historic 207 at the 1997 Ashes) and is regarded as one of the most talented batsmen of his generation. Now, he works as a popular cricket pundit and commentator and is among the most sought-after cricket after-dinner speakers on the circuit.
Born in India, his father was a keen cricketer and Nasser inherited his love for the game. Aged just seven, the family moved to the UK and this is where Nasser really fell in love with the sport. At just 14 he was selected for England Schools, and he also joined the county side, Essex.
Despite clearly being a far better batter than bowler, his father encouraged him to focus on bowling. Nasser has previously spoken of the pressure he felt due to this, and how he was frustrated that he felt like he was letting his father down. In 1990, Nasser made his England debut against the West Indies and he helped the side to a 2-1 series win. Despite this positive start, he was not picked again for over three years with selectors regarding him as too hot-headed. At his speaking events, Nasser can discuss this blow and how he was able to fight back and establish himself as one of his country’s greatest ever players. After returning to the team in 1993, he was soon a mainstay and in 1999 Nasser was named England captain, succeeding Alec Stewart in the role.
Since announcing his retirement as a professional cricketer in 2004, Nasser joined the Sky Sports commentary team providing insight and opinion on some of the world’s biggest cricket matches. Over the subsequent years, he has established himself as one of the greatest cricket broadcasters around and remains one of Sky’s leading figures in cricket coverage.
