Roberto Di Matteo
One of Chelsea’s greatest ever players and managers, Roberto Di Matteo is an iconic figure at the West London club where as a player and manager he won three FA Cups, the League Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and of course the Champions League in 2012.
Roberto became the first man to deliver the Champions League trophy to Chelsea (and any London club) after years of trying to clinch European glory. On the international stage, he played 34 times for Italy including at the 1996 European Championships and 1998 World Cup. Now, Roberto is regarded as one of the most popular football speakers around and at all of his events can delight audiences from a career on the pitch and in the dugout.
Born in Switzerland to Italian parents, Roberto’s early career saw him spend time in the Swiss leagues before signing for Rome based side Lazio in 1993. However, he’s best known for the six years he spent at Chelsea in the Premier League between 1996 and 2002.
Scoring on his debut against Middlesbrough, he became an instant fan favourite and in the 1997 FA Cup final, he opened the scoring against the same opposition with a thunderous 30-yard goal. In the League Cup final in 1998, again against Middlesbrough, he found himself on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win.
With a knack for scoring in big games, he opened the scoring in the 2000 FA Cup final against Aston Villa which gave the Blues a fourth major trophy in three years. Roberto’s insight into these key moments as well as his instantly likeable personality, have made him one of the most sought after football speakers around, ideal for events for both Chelsea fans and neutrals.
Roberto’s management career began with MK Dons in 2008 but is perhaps best known for what he achieved at Chelsea after a successful spell at West Brom. Initially joining his former club as an assistant in 2011, he found himself taking the top job when Andre Villas-Boas was sacked.
What followed was one of the greatest spells in Chelsea’s history. Despite languishing in mid-table of the Premier League, Roberto galvanised the squad by winning the FA Cup against Liverpool before undoubtedly the biggest night in the Blues’ history. In the 2012 Champions League final, Chelsea faced the mighty Bayern Munich in their own stadium but, against all odds, went on to win the iconic trophy for the first time in their history after a thrilling penalty shoot-out. The image of Didier Drogba scoring the decisive spot-kick has gone down in Chelsea legend, and when hired as a football speaker Roberto can discuss this career highlight at length.
Roberto’s managerial career also brought him to Schalke and Aston Villa, and he now can be found working as one of the most celebrated football speakers in the industry.
