A former Wales international rugby player, Ryan Jones represented his country at the highest level including World Cups and the Six Nations. Playing for Wales for a decade, he won 75 caps and was an integral part of three Grand Slam wins for his country. Extremely versatile, Ryan was often deployed in a whole host of different positions displaying his talent across the pitch. A hugely talented sportsman, up until the age of 14 he was part of Bristol City’s football academy playing as a goalkeeper. When he was 17 he took up rugby union and quickly realised his talent for the sport. At university, he captained the first team alongside making his senior debut for Newport in 1998. As his domestic career progressed, Ryan represented the likes of Bridgend, Celtic Warriors, Ospreys and Bristol. One of the highlights of his domestic career saw him captain Ospreys to a Celtic League title and Anglo-Welsh Cup win. While Ryan had an accomplished domestic career, he also made a huge impact on the international stage. In 2004, Ryan made his Wales debut in a Test match against South Africa. A year later, he was part of the squad that won the Grand Slam at the 2005 Six Nations and began establishing himself as a key player.
In 2008, he was named the captain of his country by coach Warren Gatland. In his first Six Nations as captain, Wales won a second Grand Slam in four years. In the same year, alongside Shane Williams, Ryan was one of the first-ever Welsh players to be nominated for the IRB International Player of the Year Award. At this time he was regarded as one of the best players on the planet, and in 2012 another Grand Slam followed. Having retired due to injury in 2015, in recent years he has dedicated his life to charity fundraising which saw him awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2021.

Suffering from memory problems and depression, the diagnosis has hit Ryan hard and he believes his rugby career to be the cause of the condition. Now, he’s determined to use his platform to raise awareness of the risks the sport can bring, with many former stars suffering from various health conditions due to the long-term effects of the sport. Imploring the sport’s governing bodies to bring in preventative measures to try and stop other players from suffering from this in the future, at his speaking events Ryan is able to discuss this with audiences.
