One of the European Tour’s most established players, for over two decades Sam Torrance graced the higher echelons of professional golf. With a remarkable 44 Pro wins to his name (21 on the European Tour), the Scotsman established himself as one of the best players of his generation. Since retiring from the sport, Sam can often be found working as one of the most highly sought-after golf after-dinner speakers on the circuit. A talented golfer in his youth, Sam’s father was a golf instructor who coached him from childhood. Turning professional in 1970, he became renowned for his long driving and accurate play with the short iron. Plus, his daring and courageous style on the European Tour made him an instant hit. In 1972, Sam won his first Tour event and was named Rookie of the Year in the same year. A sure sign of things to come, he went on to win a total of 21 events with his final victory coming in 1998. For a time Sam held the record for most appearances on the Tour, before being surpassed in 2020. At his speaking events, he’s able to discuss his impressive longevity, as well as share career highlights with audiences.
Throughout his career, Sam appeared at eight Ryder Cups. Winning the iconic trophy four times in total, undoubtedly his greatest moment at the tournament came in 1985. Sam was responsible for sinking the winning putt that secured victory for Europe and prevented a USA victory for the first time in 28 years. Two years later, he also played a key role as Europe defeated America on American soil for the first time ever.
In 2017 Sam retired from professional golf, with his last event coming on the European Senior Tour (now known as the Legends Tour).
