Simon Jones MBE
Simon Jones is a former England international cricketer who represented Worcestershire, Hampshire and Glamorgan in the domestic game. Despite being born and bred in Wales, Simon played 18 Test matches and eight ODIs for England, representing the country in some of the biggest matches on the world stage. Since retirement, Simon has worked as one of the most popular cricket speakers in the country.
A prolific right-armed fast bowler, his father was also a professional cricketer and Simon followed in his footsteps by making his first-class debut for Glamorgan in 1998. His Test debut came against India in 2002, and his excellent form for his domestic side also saw him selected for the 2002/2003 Ashes Tour.
Simon’s standout performances for his country came during the 2004 tour of the Caribbean, in the first Test taking the wickets of the likes of Brian Lara, Ridley Jacobs and Ryan Hinds. In his capacity as an excellent cricket speaker, Simon can share with audiences everywhere what it was like representing his country at the highest level.
Simon was also part of one of English cricket’s finest hours, during the historic Ashes series in 2005. The third Test in particular was successful for Simon, as he bowled Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne and four other Aussie batsmen. He finished the match with figures of 7-110, a personal best.
This performance went a long way to see England win the famous urn for the first time since 1986. This achievement grasped the attention of the entire nation, with the team visiting Downing Street and touring the country for celebrations.
