Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson
One of Britain’s most successful ever Paralympic athletes, Tanni Grey-Thompson’s inspirational story transcends her sporting career, and she now uses her substantial platform to work as a politician, TV presenter and one of the UK’s best diversity keynote speakers. She’s highly sought after for her views on a whole host of topics, and regularly champions disability rights and inclusion at all of her speaking events.
Tanni was born with spina bifida and has been a lifelong wheelchair user. Growing up, she struggled with her disability and used sport as an escape. She attempted a number of wheelchair sports including basketball, but in the end, settled on wheelchair racing. First appearing at the Junior National Games for Wales in 1984, Tanni’s international debut came at the 1988 Paralympics in Seoul. She won a bronze medal in the 400m, but greater success was just around the corner. She quickly established herself as one of the best paralympic athletes around, and in total won 16 medals at the event including 11 golds, four silvers and the aforementioned bronze. Tanni also held more than 30 world records and won the London Marathon six times. When booked as an after-dinner speaker, Tanni is able to supply a whole host of fascinating anecdotes from her sporting career and demonstrate to audiences everywhere how it’s possible to overcome adversity and achieve great things.
Since retiring from sport, Tanni has maintained a presence as one of Britain’s most inspirational figures. As well as spearheading a number of disability sports initiatives and schemes, in 2010 she was named a Life Peer by the House of Lords. Tanni was determined to make a move into politics and use it as a force for good. With this in mind, she doesn’t represent any political party and uses this role to make a positive impact on a variety of issues.
While her current role goes beyond just the sporting world, she maintains a keen interest in disability sports and combines her politics and activism with coaching current Commonwealth Games champion para-athlete, Jade Jones-Hall.
When booked as a diversity keynote speaker, Tanni Grey-Thompson provides a passion and motivation that are invaluable. From sharing anecdotes from life in sport to explaining how she fought to overcome monumental hurdles in her life, she really is one of a kind.
