Tony Jacklin
Regarded as the most successful British golfer of his generation, Tony Jacklin is best known for winning back-to-back Majors in 1969 and 1970 and captaining Europe to their first-ever Ryder Cup victory in 1985. Having played at the very top of the sport for many years, he can now be found working as one of the best golf after-dinner speakers in the industry. With over 50 years of golfing experience, he has a repertoire of fascinating anecdotes from his career that he can bring to audiences everywhere.
Born and bred in the Lincolnshire town of Scunthorpe, he became a professional golfer in 1962. In less than a decade he’d made history by becoming the first British player in almost 20 years to win the Open Championship, clinching the title by two strokes. In 1970, he continued this success when he won the US Open. This victory made him the only European player to win the title between the years of 1926 and 2009, a period spanning 83 years. In 1972, the European Tour was formed and Tony went on to win eight times on it.
As well as his individual success, Tony was instrumental in the team game, too. In total, he represented Great Britain & Ireland, and later Europe, in eleven Ryder Cups. This included captaining the side on four occasions, like in 1985 when Europe was successful in winning the famous jug for the first time ever. In his capacity as a popular golf speaker, Tony can discuss all of these successes, captivating audiences in the process.
After spending a few years on senior tours, he retired from tournament golf in 2004. Having been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002, he remains highly regarded in the sport and has worked as a golf pundit offering his opinions on the latest goings-on within the sport.
