VVS Laxman
Regarded as one of India’s greatest ever batsmen, VVS Laxman represented his country in some of the biggest stages for over 15 years. Born Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman, he became known as VVS Laxman for short, and since retiring has established himself as one of the best cricket speakers around whose enthralling anecdotes from a career in professional cricket make him a joy to audiences time and time again.
Growing up, VVS initially had ambitions to be a doctor and attended medical school in India. However, his talents on the cricket pitch saw him join the domestic team Hyderabad and his love for the sport saw him choose this as his profession.
It wasn’t long until he caught the attention of the national team, and his India debut came in a Test match against South Africa in 1996. In total, he played 134 Test matches for India and 86 ODIs and undoubtedly his finest hour game in a 2001 Test series against Australia. Following the first Test in Mumbai in which India was humbled and fell to a 10-wicket defeat, no one expected India to get anything from the series. VVS himself only made 20 and 12 and had a lot to prove. He went on to put on a match-winning performance where he hit a stunning 281 runs that helped them clinch the match. This form continued throughout the series and India was inspired to win 2-1. As one of the greatest after-dinner cricket speakers around, VVS can recall this experience in vivid detail, outlining how he performed such a historic feat.
VVS was soon a mainstay in the team and worked his way up to be a top-order batsman. But, between 2004-2005 he suffered from a lack of form that saw some even suggesting he should be dropped.
As one of the sport’s most inspirational cricket speakers, at all of his speaking events, VVS can discuss how he bounced back from this poor form to regain his confidence and go on to succeed in the sport. This is a story that can be beneficial to audiences in all kinds of working environments.
VVS retired from professional cricket in 2012, and in recent years has worked on the Cricket Advisory Committee which advises cricket governing bodies on a whole host of issues within the sport – demonstrating how highly regarded his insights are. As well as this, in 2020 he was appointed as the batting consultant of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Plus, he’s also embarked on a broadcasting career as a cricket commentator and pundit.
