There are not many players who have been lucky enough to put on the iconic shirt of the All Blacks, but Zinzan Brooke is arguably one of the greatest to ever do so. Regarded as one of the world’s best-ever number eights, the kiwi legend spent a decade representing his country playing 58 Test matches and scoring 89 points. During this time he helped the team to unprecedented levels of success, including winning the 1987 Rugby World Cup title – New Zealand’s first victory in the competition. Since retiring from the game Zinzan has travelled extensively, sharing stories and inspiring audiences as one of the greatest rugby speakers around.
A proud Maori who was born in the rural town of Waiuku, Zinzan grew up in a rugby-loving family along with brothers Marty and Robin who also played the sport at a high level. Zinzan’s All Blacks debut came in 1987, and in the same year, he was part of the squad that won the Rugby World Cup for the first time. As well as this, he appeared in 58 Test matches and 42 non-international games for his country, firmly establishing himself as one of the greatest players ever to represent the All Blacks. Best-known for his athleticism and remarkable kicking skills, in 1995 this was displayed in all its glory when he kicked a staggering 48-metre drop goal during the World Cup. Zinzan retired from international rugby in 1997 and spent some time in England playing domestic rugby for Harlequins and Coventry.
