For more than a decade, Azeem Rafiq spent his time playing cricket at the higher echelons of the domestic game. Representing Yorkshire, he made his senior debut at just 17 years of age before becoming the youngest ever captain, and first of Asian origin, in 2012.
Whilst at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Azeem sadly found himself a victim of consistent bullying and racism, experiences he made public in 2020. These became charges which were found to be true by an independent panel. Azeem’s bravery in speaking out has started to see meaningful change in the game.
In 2023, he released a book, It’s Not Banter, It’s Racism: What Cricket’s Dirty Secret Reveals About Our Society, and has appeared in a television documentary discussing his experiences.
