At one stage, Daley went a staggering nine years undefeated in the event and is widely regarded as the best decathlete of all time. Daley was a talented footballer and originally thought this would be his path, but switched his attention to athletics in his youth. In the 1970s he initially trained as a sprinter, but was advised to give decathlon a go. He discovered he was a natural, and competed in his first Olympics in 1976 in Montreal where he finished 18th. A few years later he had begun to establish himself as one of the event’s stars, winning gold at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. This stood him in good stead going into the next Olympics, and in Moscow, in 1980 he won his first Olympic gold medal.
This sparked a dominant period for Daley, and in 1983 at the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki, he won another title. This meant he held the European, World and Olympic titles simultaneously. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles he successfully defended his Olympic title – and his score of 8,847 was a world record that stood until 1992 and it remains a British record to this day. Since retiring from athletics in 1992, Daley has remained a prominent sporting figure in the UK.
