Jack Buckner
A former British athlete, Jack Buckner represented Team GB at two Olympic Games and is a former European Championships gold medalist in the 5,000m. The CEO of UK Athletics, his career since retiring from the sport has seen him hold sports administration roles at some of the UK’s biggest institutions, and he’s responsible for making key decisions in British athletics. A talented runner in his youth, after leaving university Jack made the decision to focus on a career in athletics. Initially racking in the 1,500m, he realised that he may be better suited to a longer distance. He opted for the 5,000m discipline, competing for England in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986. Earning a silver medal, in the same year he won gold at the European Championships in Stuttgart. Following the end of his career, he worked for sports giant Addidas before emigrating to New Zealand. However, he soon returned to the UK and went on to hold a whole host of senior positions at some of Britain’s biggest sporting organisations. This includes working as the CEO of the British Triathlon Federation and British Swimming, as well as a senior position at Sport England. These roles saw Jack responsible for a whole host of administrative decisions relating to the organisations, and he was a huge success. So much so, that in 2022 he was named CEO of UK Athletics, one of the country’s biggest sporting institutions.
