Kevin Keegan OBE
One of the most instantly recognisable figures in English football, Kevin Keegan is a former player and manager who is regarded as a legend at a number of clubs including Liverpool and Newcastle. As a player, he won three league titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup and two UEFA Cups for Liverpool, as well as the Bundesliga title in Germany for Hamburg. And in a managerial capacity, he transformed Newcastle – taking them from the second tier to within a touching distance of the Premier League title in the late 90s. Also the former manager of England, now Kevin is among the greatest football speakers around whose fascinating anecdotes from more than four decades working in the game will leave all audiences wanting more.
Kevin’s early career began at Scunthorpe United, but in 1971 he transferred to Liverpool, who under the legendary Bill Shankly were making big strides both in domestic football and in Europe. Spending six years with Liverpool, Kevin won every trophy possible – including the club’s maiden European Cup in 1977. It was at Liverpool he made his England debut, and in total Kevin won 63 caps for his country, representing them at three major tournaments.
During his spell with the Reds, Kevin also played alongside legendary players such as Kenny Dalglish, John Toshack and Emlyn Hughes, and was managed by Shankly and Bob Paisley – two of Britain’s greatest ever coaches. Upon leaving Liverpool Kevin signed for German giants Hamburg. While in Germany, he won the Bundesliga title and was named the best player in the world twice in 1978 and 1979 as the winner of the iconic Ballon d’Or. He returned to England to finish his playing career with Southampton and Newcastle. Newcastle was also where he began his managerial career, taking the Magpies from the second tier of English football to within a whisker of the Premier League title in 1996. While they ultimately missed out to Manchester United, this period in history is regarded as one of Newcastle’s greatest, and Kevin can also be thanked for bringing Alan Shearer to the club – arguably their greatest ever player.
In 1999 Kevin reached the pinnacle of his managerial career when he was appointed manager of England. Despite only spending a short time in charge, it was still a huge honour to take charge of his country and this is something he can discuss at length at all of his football speaking events.
Spells at Manchester City and then a few months back in charge of Newcastle in 2008 followed, but now Kevin spends much of his time working as one of the most popular football speakers in the industry. His down to earth and friendly nature makes him a hit every time.
