Experiencing a tragedy can shape an individual’s entire future, both for the better and the worse. Martine Wright knows this only too well, from becoming a victim of a horrific terrorist attack in which she lost both her legs to representing her country at the Paralympics, it’s these momentous stories that she now brings to audiences everywhere when working as an after-dinner speaker. On the 7th of July 2005, Martine was at the Aldgate underground tube station simply going about her day. Little did she know that being in the wrong place at the wrong time was about to change her life forever. On what has since been described as London’s darkest day, a terrorist bomb was detonated leaving her with terrible injuries and her life hanging in the balance. After ten days in a coma and losing 80% of her blood, Martine woke to the news that she’d lost both legs. In visceral and heart-breaking detail, during her speaking events she can recall these experiences in detail, leaving you and your group truly awestruck at what she’s achieved since.
Many people would have been forgiven for crumbling at this point, but after ten months of gruelling surgeries, she was determined not to let this awful incident mar her life. As part of the rehabilitation process, she took up sitting volleyball and quickly realised it was something she had a knack for. In 2009 she made her Great Britain debut at the Kent International Tournament before being selected as part of the 2012 Paralympic squad in London. Overall, she ended up being selected 40 times for her country and was known for her versatility on the court which saw her occupy many positions. And, in 2012, she was awarded the BBC Sports Personality Helen Rollason Award which is presented to an individual who has achieved outstanding things in the face of adversity.
Martine’s journey is undoubtedly fascinating and inspiring in equal measure and it is this, as well as the way she expertly delivers her speeches to achieve maximum impact, that has led to her becoming one of the greatest diversity keynote speakers in the industry.
Over the years, she has campaigned tirelessly for compensation for victims of the bombings and their families and continues to work as an inspirational ambassador for disabled sport. Determined to live life to the full, since 7/7 she’s also got married, had a son, learned to ski, jumped out of a plane and flown solo in South Africa.
