Joe Simpson is an iconic mountaineer and author whose experiences earned him worldwide fame and saw him become the star of a Hollywood documentary. After starting rock climbing as a child, during his youth, Joe read the book The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer which detailed the formidable ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland. Despite the various dangers of mountain climbing being outlined in the book, Joe was inspired and soon began scaling mountains all over the world.
In 1985, he took on the formidable West Face of Siula Grande in Peru. After becoming separated from his climbing partner, he fell through a crevasse and sustained serious injuries including a broken leg. He was presumed dead, however, he miraculously managed to drag himself back to base camp. Following this experience, he wrote a best-selling book, Touching the Void, in 1988 which was then adapted into a documentary in 2003. To date, the book has sold over two million copies and has been translated into 23 languages. In recent years, Joe has continued his career as an author including a number of non-fiction books on mountaineering and the dangers that are involved. His 2001 book, The Beckoning Silence was made into a Channel 4 documentary in 2007 and won countless awards.
