Sven Goran-Eriksson
One of the most recognisable football managers in history, Sven Goran-Eriksson is arguably best known as a former manager of the England national team from 2001-2006. As well as this, Sven has also spent time managing some of Europe’s biggest clubs including Manchester City, Roma, Benfica, Lazio and more. Sven’s managerial work has seen him travel all over the world, taking charge of various clubs and countries. Born in the small Swedish town of Torsby, Sven had a modest playing career in Sweden. But, it was as a manager that he gained worldwide recognition. He took his first managerial job at Swedish team Degerfors IF in 1977, before joining IFK Goteborg in 1979. In this role he made history. In 1982, he led the side to UEFA Cup glory, defeating German giants Hamburg in the two-legged final. This victory was the first time in history that a Swedish team had won the competition, and put him on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Following this success, he joined the Portuguese team Benfica in 1982. His impact was immediate. In his first season at the club, he won the league title and helped Benfica reach the UEFA Cup final. He then spent some time in Italy with Roma and Fiorentina before rejoining Benfica in 1989 and helping them qualify for the European Cup final. Throughout the 1990s he returned to Italy, most notably with Lazio. In what is widely regarded as one of the best periods in the club’s history, he helped the club win the Serie A title, two Coppa Italia titles and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
As a result of his work in Portugal and Italy, he was named England’s first ever foreign manager of the national team in 2001. He was an instant hit among supporters, largely due to guiding the Three Lions to an iconic 5-1 victory over rivals Germany in Munich soon after getting the job. During his time in charge, England reached three consecutive quarter-finals in major tournaments and he helped progress the careers of England’s so-called ‘golden generation’. This included nurturing the likes of Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and more. Leaving his England post in 2006, since then he has managed a whole host of teams in all corners of the globe. This includes Manchester City, Leicester City, Mexico, Ivory Coast and the Chinese team Shanghai SIPG.
Currently, Sven works as an advisor at the Swedish club IF Karlstad, using his vast knowledge of the game to guide them on all footballing matters.
