A popular member of England’s historic Rugby World Cup winning team in 2003, Will Greenwood was a world-class centre who excelled for both club and country. Will made his senior debut for Harlequins in 1994, but soon moved to Leicester Tigers. Here, he won two league titles and an Anglo-Welsh Cup as he started forging a reputation for his formidable presence in the centre of the pitch. He ended his domestic career where it began, moving back to Harlequins in 2000 where he spent six more years and helped the club become European champions twice.
Despite his proficiency for Harlequins and Leicester, it’s on the international stage where he is perhaps best known. His introduction to international rugby was unorthodox. In 1997, despite not yet playing a single game for England, he was selected ahead of then England captain Phil de Glanville to feature in the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa. His first international rugby experience continued to be unusual, as he swallowed his tongue and stopped breathing for several minutes.
Will’s England debut came in the same year, and his partnership with Jeremy Guscott was soon regarded as one of the best in the world. He became a key player for his country in 2003, in what remains one of the greatest years in English rugby history. After helping England win the Grand Slam at the Six Nations, he played an integral role in the World Cup campaign and starred as the Red Rose won their first-ever World Cup, defeating the hosts Australia 20-17 in the final.
